The Choice is a short film exploring relationships between couples under challenging situations, and how the role of children influences their relationship and choices. Meagan, a working mom, is experiencing a difficult time due to the unemployment of her husband Peter. Peter has been staying at home and unable to find another job, making Megan the only source of income. Under the pressure of feeding the entire family, Megan is stressed by the avoidant attitude of Peter, and wanted to leave this family. However, their daughter Jessica stepped in and tried to help fixing the crack of Megan and Peter’s relationship.
Just like Megan, Peter, and Jessica, many of us have experienced situations similar to those in their family. Everyone had their own struggles, making understanding each other harder than usual. In this film, Megan is suffering due to the pressure of feeding a family, Peter is struggling with the discouragement of being unemployed at middle age, and Jessica, as the child, is in fear of her parents separating. All of the characters had love for each other but the amount of problems they each were facing made understanding and forgiving each other harder than usual. I wanted to use this story to show that when families are facing challenges, they can show each other support and try to understand their struggles too, instead of making choices like leaving each other that could hurt everyone. And I also wanted to explore the role of children in couples’ conflicts. Sometimes when couples fight, they might overlook the influence on their kids, and how the kids can also have positive influence on their conflicts. Couples should also consider the kids as a part of their problem, and know that their separation can hurt their kids so much.
